Dustcheck's New Home (01.02.06)

At last, we have moved in to our new purpose designed and built facility within the heart of Stoke-on-Trent! Easy to access from the A50, A500 and M6 Motorway, the near 900m2 building now houses, for the first time, Dustcheck's manufacturing, design and administration all together on one site.
"This gives Dustcheck the 21st century facilities it needs and allows us to further expand, meeting the dust control and air filtration needs of even more companies", said Eddy Spires, joint-MD.

He expects the new facility to benefit office, design and manufacturing personnel. Mr Spires felt that the better surroundings, new equipment and more space are all going to contribute to productivity and staff satisfaction, which in turn will lead to even better relations with clients and more efficient manufacturing.

Fan Assisted Silo Venting Unit Launched (20.05.05)

Dustcheck has launched a new fan assisted silo venting filter. It joins the already successful range of silo venting filters designed for exceptional filtration in silos fed by road tankers and it utilises a 1.1Kw side mounted fan assembly

As with all Dustcheck's silo venting filters it is compact, very cost-effective, robust and easy-to-fit.

The unit is offered in both galvanised or stainless steel manufacture and incorporates Dustcheck's `quick-change' conical filters giving 21m
2 or 24m2 filter areas.  The `quick change' system gives a client reduced costs due to minimal downtime and frees up valuable maintenance engineer's time.
Filter Out the False Economy (25.05.05)

Manufacturers in the pharmaceutical industry are being warned to avoid off-the-shelf dust extraction systems as they are often ‘ineffective’ and invariably prove to be a ‘false economy’.

The claim has been made by Dustcheck after reporting an increase in the number of cases where it has been asked to rectify problems caused by cheap one-size-fits-all dust extraction and air filtration systems. The company is not lambasting the products themselves, it is instead pointing out that in many cases the off-the-shelf systems are inappropriate for the production environments that are commonplace within the pharmaceutical industry.

Managing Director, Eddy Spires, believes the role of a dust extraction system in pharmaceutical manufacturing is undervalued because there is a misconception about its impact on the production process.. "Extraction and filtration plays a pivotal role in manufacturing of some pharmaceutical products as it can have a direct impact on the quality of the goods being produced,” he said.

“If a system is ineffective there can be a silent and hidden increase in the amount of imperfections in a batch of goods and quality control procedures have to reject a higher proportion of items. “This might be as little as fractions of a percentage but the cumulative effect can prove very costly. And in many cases the direct link is not made between that and the extraction system, so production managers cannot ascertain what it is actually costing them.”

Spires is not griping about cheaper systems, as he acknowledges there is a place in the market for a range of products, but is urging pharmaceutical manufacturers to think about the lifetime cost of dust extraction or air filtration system, not just the purchase cost. He said: “We appreciate that cost is still king in the pharmaceutical industry, but if manufacturers are able to take a medium or a longer term view then the savings that can be made from installing the correct filtration system becomes very significant. This exposes off-the-shelf units for the false economy they really are.”

As well as the cost implications, the Stoke-on-Trent-based company points out that its systems also tick all the right legal, environmental and health and safety boxes. It is realistic enough to understand that these factors might not be at the top of the list when making a purchasing decision. But given there is growing pressure from environmental groups regarding omissions and COSHH striving to drive down noise pollution levels within manufacturing environments, the company sees its proposition becoming more compelling.

Spires added: “Our systems exceed many of the legal, environmental and health and safety requirements ensuring that our customers have a cost-effective solution that does not hinder their manufacturing process.”

The company has spent the last 30 years establishing and maintaining its position as the UK’s leading provider of dust control and air filtration system solutions and is a pioneer in the field of industrial cartridge filtration. This is backed up with the relationship it has with Mahle Filtersysteme GmbH - the world leader in filtration technology – as Dustcheck acts as sole supplier in the UK and Ireland.
